Why NightCut exists

NightCut is an evening without screens. ⟡Paper,⟡ ⟡conversation,⟡ ⟡wine⟡ and ⟡time.⟡ No experience required. No perfect artwork expected.

Some evenings deserve more than a screen.

The Halloween edition

Session 03 —
Ghosting

Ghosting is a printing fault: a faint second impression that turns up where nothing was printed, the first image coming back after the press has moved on.

That is the brief for the evening. Five hours this time, from eight until one, with two silent films running on the wall that nobody watches properly. Everyone draws a card at the start — whatever is in the envelope is where you begin, and you are free to ignore it by the second cut. Fifteen seats. You leave with what you made.

Not a party. The alternative to one. Black is the dress code; come in costume and you draw a second card.

15 seats. We confirm by email.

The evening

20:00

Arrive

Wine, snacks, introductions. Everyone draws a card and receives the envelope that matches it: offcuts from earlier NightCut tables, one unusual material, one large image.

21:00

Work

The quiet part. Light over the table only, Nosferatu (1922) and Vampyr (1932) silent on the wall, music underneath. Help from the host if you ask for it.

23:00

Look

A special drink is poured. Everyone walks the table to see what the others made, takes photographs, and stays for another glass until one.

The table is set.

Two hands cutting a magazine spread with scissors on red velvet, beside a glass of red wine.
The evening slows to the speed of scissors.
Wine, candles and flowers arranged on the NightCut table.
Candles burn down. Conversation doesn't.
The NightCut table laid with magazines, paper and glasses.
By the last glass, the table is one big collage.

How an evening unfolds

The ritual

Arrive

A long shared table. Candles already burning, magazines already waiting.

Pour

A glass of wine. Phones away — not forbidden, just forgotten.

Cut

Tear, slice, arrange. Images find each other; you only need to notice.

Talk

Conversation drifts across the table — no networking, no name tags, no agenda.

Keep

You leave with the piece you made and an evening that didn't happen on a screen.

Before you ask

Questions

Do I need experience?

No. Most people have never made a collage before, and there is no drawing involved. You draw a card on arrival and the envelope that matches it is where you begin — a starting point, not a rule.

Can I come alone?

Most people do. The table is shared, the group is small, and the evening is built so that introductions happen by themselves.

What is included?

Everything: paper, card, magazines, photographs, foil, fabric, scissors, scalpels, cutting mats, glue, tape and markers, plus wine, soft drinks and snacks. Bring nothing — or bring any images, paper or objects you would like to work with.

How many people attend?

Fifteen at most, at one long table.

Can I keep my collage?

Yes — whatever you make is yours to take home.

Where does it take place?

At Fábrica Moderna in Marvila, Lisbon. Exact directions are sent after booking.

What language is the event in?

English.

Is this a Halloween party?

No — it is the alternative to one. The room is dark, lit by candles and one warm light over the table, and two silent films run on the wall: Nosferatu (1922) and Dreyer’s Vampyr (1932). No dialogue, no sound from the films, music underneath.

Do I need a costume?

No. Costumes are welcome but not required, and black is preferred. Anyone who comes in costume draws a second card.

What should I wear?

Something warm. The venue is unheated concrete; blankets are provided.

Is there an age limit?

18+. Wine is served during the evening.

Will I learn anything?

The basics of analogue collage — cutting, tearing, layering, composing on the page — and how to start from found material instead of a blank sheet. Along the way, an informal word on Braque, Schwitters, Höch and Matisse.

Will I be photographed?

The evening is photographed. If you would rather not appear, say so on arrival.
